Electric Hot-water systems usually consist of a central boiler; wherein water is heated to a temperature of 140 to 180 °F (60–83 °C), then circulated via pipes to heat radiators in the various rooms. Forced circulation will be more suitable than pressure and gravity to circulate the hot water. Spaces distribute heat by radiating and convection. The cooled water gets drawn back to the boiler. Systems which extract air and transfer hot water using pipes are called combined heat and air. Combination boilers usually get used in central heating systems. Running on mains pressure heat eliminates the need for tanks in the loft and a hot-water cylinder because of instant hot water. Hot-water circulating systems save energy but are not economical.

Generally speaking, a hot-water system can be running either with one pipe or two pipes. The one-pipe scheme requires less piping than the two-pipe system, which is why it is less expensive. However, large radiators are needed at the end of the loop because these areas get less heat. Water can flow from one pipe to another because it consists of one mainline and various radiators. There are different types of installation in hydronic boiler systems, depending on the customer’s and engineer’s expectation and needs. It is useful to balance valves in a hydronic loop system and an expansion tank in indirect methods.

Radiators usually get supplied with hot water from a central point, and this is pumped back to the unit for reheating. Even though the two-pipe system requires additional excavation, it is still cheaper and easier to control than the one-pipe system. The main advantage of a two-pipe loop over the one-pipe loop is that it can be zoned. Zoning allows various requirements on the building, which in turn reduces heating costs. Two pipe system is thus efficient and easier to manage. In both scenarios, an expansion tank gets needed to compensate for differential capacity. Closed expansion tanks contain about 50% air, which is compressed and expanded to maintain water volume. Sometimes the sealed hot-water system is adopted. This system requires no drinking water tanks because it can run on steam directly from the energy source.
